On 1 April 2022, amendments to the Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) will take effect, requiring companies to take additional measures to protect personal data of data subjects. We have prepared three webinars to provide you with the relevant background on the APPI and its legal concepts, as well as steps that can be taken to comply with the APPI. This last webinar completes our three-part APPI webinar series.
In this webinar, we review key topics covered in our previous webinars and provide further details and practical guidance on compliance in view of the latest guidelines published by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC). This webinar is approximately 60 minutes long.
There are two amendments, one enacted in 2020 and the other enacted in 2021, which will come into effect on the same date. Key points for the amendment enacted in 2020 are the APPI’s extraterritorial application, data transfers to third parties in a foreign country, and data breach reporting obligations. We also provide a short introduction of the other amendment enacted in 2021 having an impact on academic research institutions such as universities and public sectors in Japan.
We hope the APPI webinar series, including this latest webinar, will help you understand the updated APPI and be prepared to handle personal information in accordance with the new APPI when it becomes effective on April 1, 2022.
