The object of this note is to provide an overview for clients, in particular international clients who are not familiar with the English law system, of the principal elements of the procedures that are followed in the English courts, and the technical expressions that are often used
English civil law essentially comprises legislation by Parliament and decisions by the courts. There is no civil code. English courts may not override Acts of Parliament and are usually required to follow decisions on the same legal issue by a court of equivalent or higher status.
